The Association of Higher Education Campus Television Administrators is conducting the 2009 AHECTA Student Production Awards. This video production contest is open to all students currently enrolled in a community college, college or university. Students can submit productions produced for course work, student television stations, classes or their own original productions.
1. WHAT ARE THE START AND END DATES?
The Contest commences at 12:01 AM Eastern Time (EST) on November 17, 2008, and ends at 11:59 PM Eastern Time (EST) on April 30, 2009 ("Entry Period"). All entries must be received by 11:59 PM Eastern Time (EST) on April 30, 2009.
2. WHO CAN ENTER?
This Contest is open to legal residents of the 50 United States (plus the District of Columbia). Entrants must be 18 years of age or older at time of entry and currently enrolled in a community college, college or university. Entrants can participate on an individual basis or as a member of a team. Entrants must also be amateurs and must not be, at time of entry, during Contest Period or at time of prize fulfillment and acceptance, a party to any agreement with any studio, production company or publishing company or any third party that might interfere with Entrant's participation in the Contest and/or acceptance of the prize awarded.
3. WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?
Entry guidelines include:
- Contestants
- More than one video submission is permissible.
- Submissions must not violate any copyright laws and all copyrighted material used in the production must be cleared. Each entrant must accept and sign the Program Release and Authorization Form.
- If submitting a Team Submission, every Team Member must be currently enrolled in a community college, college, or university. One Team Member must be designated as the Team Leader for a Team Submission. If a Team Submission wins the Grand Prize, Second Prize or Third Prize, the Team Leader will receive the cheque in the prize amount in full; one award plaque will be engraved with all Team Members' names.
- Video Production
- No professional (paid) assistance may be used in production of the video. Any entry using professional (paid) assistance will be disqualified. Note: Faculty advisors may offer support by directing contestants to other students for assistance, but cannot aid in the creative process.
- Minimal credits are allowed at the end of the video.
- Videos should include a "Terms of Use" statement after the credits. Sample Terms of Use statement: The authors/creators of the winning videos retain copyright to their productions. Permission is granted for educational, noncommercial uses of these files, provided that each is identified as being a winning entry in the 2009 AHECTA Student Production Awards.
- Content
- May be about one specific topic (see ideas for topics below).
- Must be in good taste and appropriate for multicultural college and university populations.
- Must be appropriate for all institution types (needs to work for research universities, community colleges and so forth).
- Must be original and not infringe upon any copyright, trademark or other proprietary right.
PLEASE NOTE: Video length for all Submissions must be 30 seconds to 10 minutes.
4. HOW DO I ENTER?
To Register for the Contest online:
Visit the 2009 AHECTA SPA YouTube site at http://www.youtube.com/ahecta; you must have a valid YouTube account. To create a YouTube account, go to http://www.youtube.com/signup. Upload your video entry (no longer than 10 minutes) as a "Video Response" in one of the following formats
(at least 640x480 pixel resolution):
- QuickTime (.mov)-H.264
- Windows AVI (.avi)
- Windows Media (.wmv)
- MPEG (.mpg)
The AHECTA SPA committee reserves the right to review your video before posting. Therefore, it may take up to 5 business days for your video to appear on the AHECTA YouTube Channel.
We are not responsible for entries that we do not receive for any reason, or for entries that we receive, but are not decipherable for any reason.
We will automatically disqualify:
Any entry that does not meet the entry guidelines described above.
5. WHAT ARE THE TOPICS?
The topics for submission are these standard YouTube topics:
- Education
- Entertainment
- Film & Animation
- How to & Style
- Music
- News & Politics
- Nonprofits & Activism
- Science & Technology
- Sports
- Travel & Events
6. HOW ARE THE WINNERS SELECTED AND NOTIFIED?
Winning entries will be selected based on:
- Creativity
- Was there unexpected but effective use of design elements?
- Did the message provide a new perspective?
- Technical quality for videos
- Content
- Did the video cover the appropriate topic(s)?
- Was the information conveyed of high quality?
- Overall effectiveness of delivery
- How effective was the video?
- What was the overall impact?
- How persuasive was the message?
- Is the viewer compelled to keep watching?
PLEASE NOTE: The 2009 AHECTA Student Production Award judges reserve the right to reject any video that contains content that does not meet the entry requirements or judging criteria or is deemed inappropriate for the purposes of this contest.
On June 1, 2009, we will select (1) Grand Prize Winner, (1) Second Place Winner, and (1) Third Place Winner from among all eligible entries. Non-winning entries will not automatically carry over to the following SPA judging period (to begin approximately October 1, 2009).
If you are a potential winner, we will notify you by sending a message to the e-mail address listed on your entry within seven (7) days following the decision process. If our notification is returned as undeliverable, or we are unable to reach you for any reason, we may select an alternate winner.
If there is a dispute as to who is the potential winner, we will consider the potential winner to be the authorized account holder of the YouTube account used to enter the Contest.
If you are a potential winner, we may require you to sign a declaration of eligibility and liability/publicity release. If you are a potential winner and if you are a minor in your state of residence, we may require that your parent or legal guardian sign a declaration of eligibility and liability/publicity release. If you (or your parent/legal guardian if applicable) do not sign and return these required forms within the time period listed on the winner notification message, we may disqualify you.
Winners will need to be able to provide high resolution format of their submission for purposes of rebroadcast by AHECTA and AHECTA members.
7. WHAT IS/ARE THE PRIZE(S)?
Winning entries will be eligible for broadcast on college broadcast stations. Some winning entries may also be eligible for broadcast by a sponsor.
One (1) Grand Prize Winner
- $1,000 check made payable to Entrant
- Award plaque inscribed with the name of the Entrant
One (1) Second Place Prize Winner
- $750 check made payable to Entrant
- Award plaque inscribed with the name of the Entrant
One (1) Third Place Prize Winner
- $500 check made payable to Entrant
- Award plaque inscribed with the name of the Entrant
REGARDING GROUP ENTRIES:
PLEASE NOTE: Winners will be required to complete tax identification forms and are advised that the cash award will be reported as earnings to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
